TSCPA Facts and Figures About TSCPA | TSCPA Leadership | Chapters The Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA) is a nonprofit, voluntary, professional organization representing Texas CPAs. TSCPA has 20 local chapters statewide and has 28,000 members, the largest in-state membership of any CPA organization in the nation. The Society is committed to serving the public interest with programs that advance the highest standards of ethics and practice within the CPA profession.
TSCPA Leadership
John M. Sharbaugh is the CEO and Executive Director of the Texas Society of CPAs (TSCPA).
Sharbaugh, most recently the vice president of State Societies and Regulatory Affairs with the American Institute of CPAs in Washington, D.C., is an experienced association executive with a record of over 26 years of accomplishments in various management positions in the accounting field. Before starting with AICPA in 1988, he served as executive director of the North Carolina Association of CPAs, and as deputy executive director and CPE manager for the Florida Institute of CPAs. His professional credentials include a Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation issued in 1991 by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). He received a B.A. from Pennsylvania State University in 1972, and an MBA from the University of Florida in 1976.
Steve Goodman is the President and Chief Investment Officer of Goodman Financial Corporation, a fee-only money management firm founded in 1988.
In addition to being a CPA, he is also a CFP® and is registered as an investment advisor with the Securities and Exchange Commission. He is a 1983 and 1985 graduate of the University of Houston, with an undergraduate in Hotel and Restaurant Management from the Conrad N. Hilton College and a masters of science in Accountancy and Taxation from the Bauer College of Business. Goodman spent two years with the Big 8 firm of Arthur Young prior to founding his firm. He has been very active with TSCPA at both the state and chapter level for many years serving as chair of numerous committees, as a member of the Executive Board (2001-04; 2006-07), president of the Houston chapter (1996-97), as a member of the TSCPA Board of Directors since 1994 and for two years as chairman of the TSCPA's Strategic Planning Committee. In 1993-94 he received the Houston Chapter/TSCPA's "CPA of the Year" award. Steve and his wife Hilda have three daughters (Roxanne, Emily and Amy) and two grandchildren (Dylan and Chloe). Approximate Chapter Membership Abilene Chapter - 355 members The Accountancy Museum of the TSCPA, Inc. — Provides programs that commemorate the progress and significant events within both the accounting profession and TSCPA, for the purpose of maintaining a connective history of the profession and organization. New modern exhibits are being developed for display at the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy offices in Austin and the TSCPA offices in Dallas.
The Accounting Education Foundation of the TSCPA, Inc. — Provides financial assistance to students in the field of accounting. Through scholarships, seminars and programs, the Foundation enhances the quality of education in accounting and contributes to a high level of competence within the profession. Contributions from TSCPA members and businesses have provided over $4.4 million in support of these and other programs since 1957. Accounting Career Awareness — A statewide program that provides information, speakers and resource materials to students and educators regarding careers in accounting. TSCPA CPE Foundation, Inc. —- Founded in 1977, the Foundation provides more than 500 continuing education programs in a variety of formats to meet the needs of our members each year. CPAs are required by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy to obtain 120 hours of continuing professional education credit within a three-year period, including an ethics requirement.
Peer Review Program — Created in 1989, this program administers a mandatory practice-monitoring program to more than 5,000 CPA firms in Texas and Utah. The Texas State Board of Public Accountancy requires that all CPAs engaged in the practice of accounting and/or auditing must do so through a registered practice unit and complete a peer review every three years in order to remain licensed as a CPA.
Government Affairs
CPA-PAC — Serves the public interest by assisting on a nonpartisan basis those candidates who understand the importance of and support the maintenance of high moral, ethical and professional standards for the accounting profession.
State Taxation — Stays abreast of proposed state tax legislation and advises legislators of its probable effect and impact on the Texas economy. This group meets regularly with the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.
